![]() ![]() ![]() In some cases, the pupils may continue to respond normally to light, while in other cases, their responses may differ from one another.Ĭaution: If you notice that your pupils suddenly become unequal in size, seek immediate medical attention as this can be a symptom of a medical condition that requires prompt treatment. What causes unequal pupils?Īnisocoria may be diagnosed if one pupil is bigger or smaller than the other. In most cases, having two different pupil sizes is not a cause for concern - but in some cases, it can indicate a serious problem, requiring emergency medical attention. Occasionally, the two pupils can appear unequal in size. The pupil controls the amount of light that enters the eye by widening and constricting in response to light intensity. The pupil is the black hole in the center of the iris, the part that gives your eye its unique color. One question about the affected eye - do you recall ever having any pain in that eye or blurriness that eventually went away?Different sized pupils could indicate a serious health issue requiring urgent medical care. Ideally, the MRIs will be done with and without contrast. I think it's good that your doctor is starting with a brain MRI but if they want to be very thorough, ask about possibly doing an MRI of the orbits at the same time (it only adds about 15 minutes). There's not a person on this board that doesn't know what it's like to be scared the first time you hear MS when it's not on your radar! But please, take it one step at a time and know that if it does turn out to be MS, it's not the end of the world. You will read about people being dxed 50 and over and in their teens (and even children) but actually, 28 falls into the most common age group. There's more to it than this but this will hopefully get you started with at least a vague understanding. In MS, the myelin sheath that surrounds the nerve is attacked and just like a wire with frayed insulation, it can start misfiring. There are a lot of different things that can cause brain lesions and although there can be atypical types of presentations in MS, most of the time they are noted by a certain shape and appearing in specific regions of the brain. Also, in answer to your questions, the easiest (but not technical) way to explain a lesion is to think of it as a scar. Just FYI, not everyone with MS experiences eye problems. That said, your doctor might want to do tests before referring you to one - totally understandable. This type of doctor is certified in both ophthalmology and neurology and they specialize in neurological conditions of the eye. Whatever it is, since your eye problem is suspected to be neurological in nature you should ask your doctor about seeing a neuro-ophthalmologist. There are a lot of other things besides MS that can cause something like this and it is also possible it could also be caused by one on the optic nerve (this is not normally covered in a plain brain MRI). ![]() If your pupil is not dilating properly it sounds like not enough light is coming into the affected eye. There are lots of people who have a lot more symptoms than you do who have a hard time being taken seriously so it's great that they're investigating this. To be honest, that conclusion sounds like a pretty big jump but the good news is that he wants to do an MRI. Is uneven pupil dilation related to MS? I am only 28 so isn't that pretty young? What is a lesion on the brain? Hair loss, muscle twitches and muscle jerks when I am going to sleep. Lately, I haven't had any other symptoms, but I have had weird things in the past that were never fully diagnose. So I had an MRI and am waiting the results. (He said he has never seen this before and it is not classic anisocoria.) SO he said something about the efferent pathway, something about a lesion on the brain, and mentioned perhaps MS. ![]() The neurologist was pretty shocked because in one instance the eyes are fine, but in another they don't dilate together. He found that my pupils did not dilate evenly. I had told him that I was seeing funny in the dark so he checked my dilation. I have a medical situation that is leaving me really uneasy. I am new to the boards so posting on a few. ![]()
